September 21, 2016 - Young Philanthopists kicks-off at NCNC

The 2016-17 Young Philanthropists Program held it's kick-off meeting at the New Canaan Nature Center with almost 40 local high school students participating this year. The group meets monthly at area organizations to learn about our local nonprofits work and investigate the importance of collaboration in implementing solutions for complex social challenges. 


May 19, 2016 - Grant Awards Coffee

Thanks to our generous donors, this year we awarded $668,000 in main cycle grants to 73 organizations working in the areas of arts and culture, health care, youth and education, programs for seniors, and human services.


May 4, 2016 - Young Philanthropist Grants

Grace Farms hosted our 2016 Youth Philanthropy celebration in their beautiful Commons.  We were joined by Kathy Seiver of Newman's Own Foundation, who spoke about the incredible impact that young philanthropists are having in Kenya's Kibera slum. Our graduating Young Philanthropists represented the group of 35 participating students and presented nine grants for $12,000 to support nonprofits working in the areas of mental health, homelessness, and education.


May 3, 2016 - Philanthropy Luncheon

Over 300 guests attended our Philanthropy Luncheon to hear UConn President Susan Herbst and some of our scholarship recipients speak.  Corporate sponsors, guests, and donors helped us raise more than $60,000 for our scholarship fund.


March 4, 2016 - Annual Appeal

Our 2015 Annual Appeal, led by co-chairs Sharon McClymonds and Christopher Gruseke reached a record number of donors and raised more than $560,000, including more than $430,000 in unrestricted gifts which will go out as grants to nonprofits this Spring.

More than 150 friends of New Canaan Community Foundation joined us for our Annual Meeting and Cocktail Party at Waveny House for an update on the work of the Foundation and to hear guest speaker Elizabeth Tauck Walters, President of the Tauck Family Foundation.

October 5, 2015 - Photo contest winners chosen

The winners for this year's I ♥ NC photo contest have been selected! We received wonderful photographs from residents illustrating what they love about our special community. Congratulations to the winners - Carrie Deane Corcoran, Andrea Chalon, Norm Jensen, Abby Thomas and Valerie Stryker!  On behalf of the winners grants were made to South Avenue Cottage, New Canaan Library, Filling in the Blanks, Mikey Czech Foundation and New Canaan Community Foundation.


October 4, 2015 - Young Philanthropists learn about innovation

At their October meeting, our Young Philanthropists learned about affordable housing from CT Commissioner of Housing Evonne Klein and local experts Rob Mallozzi and Scott Hobbs.  To put the concepts of innovative and collaborative problem solving into practice, they worked in groups to test their teamwork and creative skills and see which team could build the tallest spaghetti tower!

June 9, 2015 - Volunteer recognition returns to New Canaan

Continuing a tradition begun by the Volunteer Center in 1998, the Community Foundation is proud to acknowledge extraordinary volunteer efforts by New Canaan residents, including honoring some "unsung" heroes who have not been recognized for their efforts. We are very fortunate to have countless volunteers in our community who go above and beyond.


May 28, 2015 - More than $650,000 in grants awarded

The New Canaan Community Foundation presented over $650,000 in grants to 69 local nonprofit organizations on May 28th.  The awards are the culmination of months of application reviews, site visits, and financial reviews by the Foundation's dedicated board members and grant volunteers.  This year's grant awards helped us reach a key milestone -- since 1977, the Foundation has given away $10 million in grants and scholarships!  


May 7, 2015 - Young Philanthropists Award $17,000 in Grants

Thirty-six high school students participated in the Community Foundation's Young Philanthropist Program this year, learning about philanthropy and the many nonprofit organizations serving our community.  The students worked together to review 29 grant applications for programs serving low income children in grades pre-K through 8th, and ultimately awarded $17,000 ($12,000 raised by this year's students) in grants to eleven local nonprofits.


February 13, 2015 - Main cycle grant applications are in

It's the grant-making time of year again and the Foundation has $625,000 to award!  We received 76 proposals from local nonprofits, requesting over $1.1 million.  Our 100 volunteers are busy helping us review each request and decide where our donors' charitable dollars will have the most impact. 


January 22, 2015 - Record year for the Foundation

Outgoing President Dave Hunt reported 2014 as a record-breaking year for the Community Foundation with more than $1.2 million in charitable dollars awarded in high-impact grants to local nonprofits and life-changing scholarships for local students and 15% more donors contributing to their fundraising efforts than in 2013.

December 11, 2014 - Santa's workshop is warm again

The Foundation was proud to issue an emergency out of cycle grant to the Girl Scout's Merrie Bee Cabin when they learned that the fuel oil tank which heats Santa’s Workshop had deteriorated irreparably, raising the prospect of a Workshop-less holiday for scores of locals, it represented a problem not just for the Exchange Club and Girl Scouts, but the community at large.

September 30, 2014 - Photo contest winners announced

We received over 100 amazing entries to our I New Canaan photo contest and the judges have chosen the winners!  Congratulations to Jane Beiles, Carrie Deane Corcoran, Norman Jensen, and Hayden Hane!!  Each of these residents chose an organization to receive a grant on their behalf: New Canaan CARES, New Canaan Community Foundation, New Canaan Library and Strays & Others.  The Foundation will also award a grant to Carriage Barn Arts Center, New Canaan High School Art Department, and Silvermine Guild Arts Center to thank each of the judges. September 10, 2014 - Outreach 2014 kicks off

The Foundation kicked off this year's fundraising efforts, led  by Co-Chairs Judy Bentley and Eric Thunem, and supported by a committee of thirty-two volunteers. September 5, 2014 - Survey demonstrates the importance of our work to local organizations

The Foundation recently released results from our online survey of 76 leaders of area nonprofit organizations. Responses demonstrate the importance of NCCF as a local funder of high quality programs and will guide grant-making policy at the Community Foundation. “NCCF provides professional, relevant and consistent support on a myriad of issues, with staff and volunteers with exceptional breadth and scope of knowledge and skills. The Community Foundation made $882,000 in charitable investments in our community this spring, culminating with our annual grant award event to celebrate local philanthropy.


May 7, 2014 - Luncheon raises money for needy residents

The Touch A Life Luncheon held at the Country Club of New Canaan raised over $63,000 for our Touch A Life program which helps needy New Canaan residents with essential expenses like rent, heating oil, and school supplies.


May 1, 2014 - Grant award funding finalized

Final funding decisions have been made and over $683,000 in grant awards will be distributed to 61 local non-profit organizations working to improve the quality of life in our community! Thanks to our 70 grant volunteers for their hard work and dedication to this very important process! The award checks will be given out at our annual Grant Award Coffee on Friday, May 30th at 10:00am at the New Canaan Library.


Grant budget set at $600,000 for Spring 2014 Awards

The Foundation will distribute $600,000 in grant funds during our spring grant-making process. We received sixty-eight grant applications, requesting more than $935,000.  Our Board members and 58 grant-making volunteers conduct site at to these local organizations as we make hard decisions about which programs to support with our high-impact charitable investments.


Major milestone reached in Foundation's history

In 2013, the combined gifts of New Canaan residents allowed the Foundation to award over $1,050,000 in high-impact grants and life-changing scholarships. This is a major milestone!  For the first time in our 36-year history, the Community Foundation's charitable distributions invested in our community surpassed the $1 million mark. We are very grateful for the continued generosity of our donors!

Our second annual Spirit of New Canaan luncheon was a great success as we recognized local residents for their extraordinary efforts to make the world a better place.  The event was filled to capacity as we gathered to honor Mary & Frank Fetchet, Lou Marinelli, and Jim Bach for their contributions to our Town and beyond.  The benefit raised over $45,000 for our Spirit of New Canaan fund, and more than $10,000 for our Touch A Life fund thanks to the generosity of corporate sponsors and donors.

2016 Annual Appeal Kick-Off

NCCF launched it’s 2016 Annual Appeal at a kick-off party at Waveny House on September 7th, welcoming a record 54 committee members who’ve pledged to help with this critical work.  The town-wide Annual Appeal is the largest source of funds for the Foundation’s spring grant cycle which in 2016 supported 73 area nonprofits with $638,000 in funding.

This summer’s booth at the sidewalk sale was buzzing with activity thanks to our non-profit partners and loyal volunteers!  The exciting demonstrations and activities from several local nonprofit partners included a touch tank, a visiting goat, and a cellist!  


No Letting Go Movie Screening

On July 12th the Foundation partnered with Laurel House, Silver Hill Hospital and New Canaan Library, to present a community screening of the award-winning feature film No Letting Go.  The screening was followed by a Q&A session with Randi Silverman, the film's writer and producer.

Barn Owl Release

The Foundation partnered with Wildlife in Crisis and the New Canaan Land Trust for the release of a rehabilitated, healthy Barred Owl on Saturday June 4th at the Livingston-Higley Meadow Preserve on Apple Tree Lane in New Canaan.  It was a beautiful and heartwarming sight to behold!

Nearly 100 friends of the Community Foundation came out for an evening of guest bartending by Judy Bentley, Dave Hunt and Leo Karl.  Our celebrity bartenders served a crowded room wine and cocktails and earned the Foundation over $1000!   The event was a great success!

We enjoyed another successful sidewalk sale booth thanks to our non-profit partners and loyal volunteers!  Once the storm cleared the fair was buzzing with residents and visitors, many of whom stopped by our booth for the activities and information brought by several of our grantee organizations.


Great-Horned Owl release

May 17, 2015

Wildlife in Crisis, a Weston nonprofit supported by grants from the New Canaan Community Foundation and working to rescue and rehabilitate injured animals, partnered with the Foundation to release a recovered great-horned owl on May 17th.  More than 75 residents watched as the owl took flight from Wildlife in Crisis Director Dara Reid's arm, swooped over the crowd, and landed high in a tree at Waveny Park.  


Spirit of New Canaan Luncheon

The New Canaan Community Foundation hosted a sold-out benefit luncheon at Woodway Country Club on April 29th to offer a unique tribute to local leaders who embody the altruistic spirit and character of New Canaan.  Dr. Thomas Flynn, Kathy Giusti, and Pat and Hud Stoddard were honored for their tremendous compassion and dedication to their charitable causes.  Thanks to the support of corporate underwriters and generous individuals, the luncheon netted nearly $66,000 for the Spirit of New Canaan fund, which makes grants to initiatives that maintain the unique spirit and character of our town.

Bankwell on Elm hosted a reception marking the opening of the photo exhibit featuring images from the Community Foundation’s 2014 “I ♥ New Canaan” photo contest. Guests enjoyed wine, cheese and the lovely photography depicting the people, places, and events that make New Canaan such a special place to live. The reception also marked the beginning of the Community Foundation’s 2015 “I ♥ New Canaan” Photo Contest.  The photographs will be on display for the community to enjoy through the end of May and the framed photographs are available to purchase.


Best Practices in Nonprofit Board Governance for Current and Prospective Board Members

Attendance at our free workshop was remarkable! A panel of experts in nonprofit organizations discussed how Board members serve as leadership volunteers. Attendees learned how Boards can improve their organizations’ effectiveness by the intentional adoption of good governance practices, and function in constructive partnership with their chief executives to continually improve performance. Financial Literacy for Young Adults and Their Parents

Over 65 parents and teens braved the cold weather to attend the Community Foundation’s workshop on Financial Literacy hosted by the New Canaan Library.  The program, led by experts from JP Morgan, covered budgeting, savings and checking accounts, credit and investing. 


Spinning & Yoga for a Cause

For a second year, Oxygen Fitness hosted the Community Foundation’s fitness event to benefit our Young Philanthropist program.  The funds raised at the event goes toward their own grant-making program to support education for pre-K through 8th grade, with an emphasis of helping low-income children.  A record number of 29 proposals have been received, requesting nearly $80,000 in charitable support.

More than 125 guests joined us at Waveny House for our annual meeting reception featuring the inspirational keynote speaker Emily Tow Jackson of the Tow Foundation. The Foundation shared all of the great successes of 2014 including a record year with more than $1.2 million in charitable dollars awarded in high-impact grants to nonprofits in the region and life-changing scholarships for local students. New Board President, Leo Karl III, welcomed incoming Board members Kathleen Abbott, Rob Fryer, Kelly Hanratty, John Knight, Kay Linneman, Sheila Pettee, and Jay Twombly. Kids Care at West Elementary School

November 12, 2014

Visiting the Kids Care group at West elementary school is a favorite annual highlight!  This year Executive Director Cynthia Gorey read two stories about thankfulness to the children and led a discussion about being thankful. The children eagerly gave ideas of what they were thankful for and distinguished their ideas between needs and wants, as Cynthia pointed out that many of the people NCCF helps do not have everything they need. These kids are a delight and so smart!  The children saw photos of the nonprofit organizations holding the handprints they made last year.  We helped them see how they have touched other people’s lives through caring and giving back.  The Foundation is so thankful to have even more beautiful handprints made by the children to present to our grantees next year!


Sidewalk Sale

Our booth was very special this year thanks to our non-profit partners and volunteers! We kicked off our I ♥ New Canaan photo contest, provided raffle items, gave out beach balls and balloons and sold lots of our new I ♥ New Canaan car magnets! Our non-profit partners enjoyed the day meeting NCCF Board members and speaking with visitors about their organization.  We had pygmy hedgehogs, a bearded lizard, a shy owl, arts & crafts and seed planting for children.  Thank you to everyone who visited our booth this year!

Touch A Life Luncheon

Over 220 Foundation supporters attended the Touch A Life Luncheon with Lee Woodruff as our keynote speaker.  The event, co-chaired by Marjorie Furman and Kathy Schulte, was a great success raising over $63,000 for our Touch A Life program which helps needy New Canaan residents with essential expenses. Our tables were named for the ways we help our neighbors, from rent and utilities to prom dresses and school supplies.




Shop & Dine for a Cause

Our Young Philanthropists hosted a special fundraising dinner and silent auction at elm restaurant.  Prizes were donated by Caren Forbes, Earth Garden, Noelle Day Spa, She La La, Vineyard Vines and Silvermine Arts Center.  A percentage of sales from Ten Thousand Villages and Caren Forbes that afternoon were also contributed to the teen philanthropy program.


Oxygen Fitness Hosts Super Bowl Shape Up

Oxygen Fitness sponsored our event which benefited the Young Philanthropists Fund. We had a terrific weekend, with fitness expert Megan Hoffman teaching bootcamp and spinning classes and Jen Buckman leading an amazing yoga class. Participants were also treated to delicious samples of smoothies from the juice bar at Oxygen. We raised over $3700 thanks to your support!!

Kids Care at West School

Cynthia Gorey, NCCF Executive Director, spoke to the Kids Care group at West School about the meaning of philanthropy and how the Foundation helps the community.  The students had an amazing understanding of what being a philanthropist means to them and were eager to share their stories.  Children made a craft that the Foundation will share with our grant recipients.


Holiday Stroll

December 6 & 7, 2013

Local merchants supported the Foundation by contributing a percentage of their sales or displaying a donation box for their customers to give.  On Saturday, the Foundation joined the holiday festivities and set up a tent on Elm Street where children made holiday crafts with Foundation volunteers.

During this week we launched a public awareness campaign to share stories with donors about the impact of our grant-making on local families.  Thank you to everyone who stopped by our open house on Friday, November 15th!


 

Spirit of New Canaan Luncheon

Our second annual Spirit of New Canaan luncheon was a great success as we recognized local residents for their extraordinary efforts to make the world a better place.  The event was filled to capacity as we gathered to honor Mary & Frank Fetchet, Lou Marinelli, and Jim Bach for their contributions to our Town and beyond.  The benefit raised over $40,000 for our Spirit of New Canaan fund, and more than $10,000 for our Touch A Life fund thanks to the generosity of corporate sponsors and donors.
